PHANTOM THREAD - REVIEW

Image
Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film, Phantom Thread , sees Daniel Day-Lewis play a respected fashion designer who meets a waitress and starts a rather awkward relationship with her. This is, as far as we know, probably the actor's final performance in a film. In contrast to the grim and intense There Will Be Blood , this new film seemed like a potentially lighter and less depressing effort. In a way, this is true since we're dealing with a man who makes dresses rather than a scary moustached man who sucks up oil "milkshakes" from the ground but this remains another typically unnerving and dark P. T. Anderson creation. The point of the film not being the dress-making itself as this isn't exactly a biopic, but rather everything else. It's the relationship between the fussy and closed-off yet undeniably talented Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and waitress Alma (Vicky Krieps) that takes centre stage. Woodcock is shown to be a true artist and a perfec

INFERNO - REVIEW

Image
Despite the lukewarm reception of both The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons , this year saw Ron Howard bring us yet another instalment based on Dan Brown's popular series of novels. Inferno continues Robert Langdon's (Tom Hanks) quest to save the world through running around museums and solving obscure historical puzzles. We first meet Langdon as he wakes up in hospital following some kind of accident he can't remember. His vision blurred and memory fuzzy due to head trauma, he is led out of the hospital by Dr. Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones) who sees an assassin heading her patient's way. Strange, apocalyptic dreams and a hidden item lead Langdon and Brooks to slowly uncover the truth behind a mystery linked to Dante's Inferno. The real challenge for Robert Langdon this time is having to try and stop a potential terrorist plot despite not knowing who to trust because of partial amnesia. This being a Ron Howard film, it is competently made: the tense hosp

MY TOP 25 BEST FILMS OF 2016

Image
Time once more to look back at another year and figure out what our favourite movies were!  2016 may have been the most disappointing cinematic year in a while but let's be positive... for now. Here are my Top 25 Best Films Of 2016 . Feel free to share your favourites in the comments! 25 THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER'S WAR While an inferior, extremely derivative sequel in which Snow White is mysteriously absent, The Huntsman: Winter's War was a fun blockbuster with lots of creative visual effects and a likeable cast. Completely unnecessary, somewhat messy yet enjoyable. 24 THE MONKEY KING 2 This sequel may not have starred Donnie Yen but fans of the timeless Journey To The West story should have had fun with The Monkey King 2 regardless. A refreshing alternative to Hollywood blockbusters, this one starred Gong Li as an evil witch and it was very entertaining. 23 DEADPOOL Certainly one of the most overrated films of 2016, Deadpoo

TOP 10 BEST DC MOVIE VILLAINS

Image
And so it's time to list my Top 10 Best DC Movie Villains , to even things out with my Top 10 Worst compilation. I'm not counting the animated movies in this list, just so you know. 10 HECTOR HAMMOND Green Lantern Probably the most underrated part of Green Lantern was Peter Sarsgaard's solid performance as Hector Hammond. The pathetic nature of the character is portrayed really well by the actor who gives the villain a growing edge as he is consistently ignored by his father and eventually turns into a macrocephalic monster. Sarsgaard takes the character seriously, even after his freakish transformation, and you do care about Hammond since he didn't start out as a bad guy so seeing him turn into an evil super-villain is surprisingly tragic.   9 THE RIDDLER Batman Forever Here's a villain that easily could have made it into the Top 10 Worst list in that he's both so over-the-top it's distracting but, on the other hand, he's

MY TOP 10 BEST FILMS OF 2015

Image
2015 was a strange year for movies: a lot of Oscar-bait, a lot of mindless blockbusters, some gems in-between. Oddly, it turns out I didn't go to the movies quite as much as past years so take this top 10 with the knowledge that I shall amend the list eventually when I'm finally all caught up with some key indie flicks. In the meantime, here are my 10 Best Films Of 2015 : 10 RUN ALL NIGHT You could be forgiven for purposely missing this movie when it came out. Armed with an awful title and a synopsis not too dissimilar from every other Liam Neeson B action flicks, Run All Night could have had Neeson in a bikini on the poster and people would have still not wanted to see it. Which is a shame since it was actually a really good thriller with Ed Harris on top intimidating form as the main baddie, lots of well put-together, tense action sequences and some nifty cinematography. Like last year's A Walk Among The Tombstones , this is not only far better than Taken bu
