BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (2014) - REVIEW

Two years before Disney attempted remaking their own version of the classic fairy tale, there was a live-action Beauty And The Beast movie made in France. Since this is a French fairy-tale, this movie had the potential to show the Mouse House how it's done and tell the definitive story. That said, improving on Jean Cocteau's classic while attracting the Disney audience was always going to be tough but with Léa Seydoux and Vincent Cassel as Belle and The Beast along with inventive director Christophe Gans leading the way, there was a good chance we would get something at least worth seeing. Indeed, this take on the timeless tale is the most visually impressive out there: the art direction, production design and cinematography are beautiful throughout and even the CGI is pretty effective. This is, in short, a fantastic-looking movie and it's certainly worth a look for that alone. A good amount of time is spent introducing us to Belle's family, showing how their money

THE STEPFORD WIVES - REVIEW

Image
A remake of the 1975 satirical sci-fi thriller, Frank Oz's The Stepford Wives was released in 2004 and it was a more light-hearted, comedic take on the story. Nicole Kidman is Joanna Eberhart, a reality TV producer we first meet as she announces the exploitative new shows she's currently working on. She soon gets fired, however, after one of the people whose life was ruined by one of her shows comes back and threatens her life in front of everybody. Looking for a fresh start following a nervous breakdown, she, her husband Walter (Matthew Broderick) and their kids move to a suburb in Connecticut. They are greeted by an overly friendly and smiley Glenn Close who introduces them to the Stepford community that seems to function not unlike 1950's suburbia with the husbands doing whatever they want and the wives catering to their husbands' needs with bright-coloured dresses and a big smile on their face. Joanna tries to fit in at first but, soon enough, she starts to no

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (2017) - REVIEW

Another year, another Disney live-action adaptation of one of their most beloved animated classics. This time, it's Beauty And The Beast 's turn with Emma Watson taking on the role of Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast. It's been a hit-and-miss road for Disney with even its best remakes being just about average and still very much inferior to the originals. The Jungle Book may have killed at the box-office but it failed to capture the charm of the old film so this new outing, with the tons of CGI the trailers promised, looked like more of the same. The film opens with a ball taking place in the Prince's castle when an Enchantress in disguise shows up and puts a spell on him and everyone there. The expanded yet well-handled sequence leads us to more familiar territory as Belle is introduced and a big musical number follows. These first few minutes set the tone for things to come: some parts of the story are stretched longer, other parts are pretty much shot-for-sho
