DRAG ME TO HELL - REVIEW
Directed and co-written by Sam Raimi, Drag Me To Hell was a horror film from 2009 about a loan officer who makes a very powerful enemy when she denies an elderly woman a loan as the latter attacks her before rewarding her with a terrible curse. Raimi's return to the horror genre after completing his Spider-Man trilogy, Drag Me To Hell is every bit as violent and wacky as you'd expect from the man who brought us The Evil Dead and its madcap sequels. If anything, this is far more a comedy than it is a horror film. There are gross-out "scares" but those are more hilariously odd and disgusting than they are actually frightening. Take the multiple scenes in which the poor cursed heroine Christine (Alison Lohman) gets thrown up on or when she's the one throwing up various fluids, for example. SPY HARD - REVIEW
In the same spirit as the Naked Gun and Airplane! movies, Spy Hard was a joke-a-minute spoof movie starring Leslie Nielsen as a clueless James Bond-style agent. Released in 1996, the film may have done reasonably well at the box-office but it was also critically panned. It's no secret that post-Naked Gun, comedies of that type, not just the ones starring Nielsen, failed to recapture the same quality established by Airplane! back in 1980. Even Airplane II: The Sequel , which came out only a couple of years later, couldn't nail it. There's no denying, however, that no matter how bad the movie was, Leslie Nielsen himself was always charming, likeable and very funny. Along with the underrated Wrongfully Accused and Dracula: Dead and Loving It , Spy Hard was one of the actor's better later efforts as the Bond theme certainly provided a lot of material to work with from over-the-top plots and villains to goofy gadgets, femme fatales and an overly macho lead. TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D - REVIEW
Oh boy... Just when you think a franchise can't sink any lower... That Michael Bay-produced remake was just what I expected it to be: dumb, annoying, shot like a music video, missing the point of the original completely. I frankly couldn't stand that movie. Then, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning came out and, as unnecessary as it was, it was surprisingly not that bad. It still ripped off Tobe Hooper's first film to death but it was harmless enough as far as random prequels go. Then we get Texas Chainsaw 3D and, shockingly, we get what is quite probably the worst of the bunch! Boy I'm glad we rebooted that franchise! Aren't you? The film opens on blurred, cheaply 3D-ed footage from the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre film and although they've somehow managed to make it look rubbish, it's still good enough to put you in the right mood.
